The average cost for a fan to watch any of New York's professional sports teams win a championship ranges from $8,550 to $240,486.

The Brooklyn Nets have the most expensive championship title at $100,884, while the Yankees and Devils come in second and third with costs of $56,651 and $54,230 respectively.

The Liberty and Red Bulls are both marked as having an infinite cost due to not having won any championships yet. The Mets have the fourth highest cost at $206,204 and the Rangers come in fifth with an average cost of $141,329.

They may have only won one championship, but if you’re looking for budget-friendly glory, New York City FC are your team - offering a championship title for every $8,550.

The Yankees offer good value, as despite being the most expensive team to follow, you’ll get a World Series for every $56,651. Bad news for Mets and Knicks fans, as you’ll be spending $206,204 and $240,486 respectively. Red Bulls and Liberty have yet to win championships so we won’t even go there.

It's clear that New York sports fans have paid a significant amount of money to support their teams over the years. The total cost for all teams combined since formation is over $4 million dollars (adjusted for inflation). The team with the highest estimated cost to support since formation was the Yankees at $1.5 million, and they also had the most championship wins with 27.

On the other end of the spectrum, there were two teams that had no championship wins: the New York Liberty and New York Red Bulls. Despite this, fans still had to pay substantial money to support these teams over time.

Overall, this data shows that although there might be some correlation between total cost and the number of championship wins, it is not always guaranteed as some teams have won championships despite having lower costs associated with them.

By Sport

Football

The data shows that the estimated total cost for fans to watch each of New York's football teams per season is higher for the Giants than it is for the Jets.

The total cost to watch the Giants per season is $1,445 and the total cost to watch the Jets per season is $1,140. This difference in estimated costs can be attributed to differences in ticket prices and also likely to differences in refreshment prices between the two stadiums.

It is important to note that this data does not take into account additional costs such as parking or transportation that may need to be factored in when considering attending a game.

Basketball

The data shows that the total cost of watching a season of basketball in New York varies significantly across the city's three professional teams.

The Brooklyn Nets have the lowest estimated cost for a season at $3,603, which includes tickets, refreshments and one shirt. The New York Knicks are the most expensive team to follow with an estimated total cost of $6,246 per season.

Finally, fans of the New York Liberty can watch a season for an estimated total cost of $1,162. This data suggests that following the Brooklyn Nets is the most affordable option for fans in New York City looking to support their local basketball teams.

Baseball

The data shows that it is significantly more expensive for fans to watch the New York Yankees than the New York Mets, with an estimated total cost of $12,589 compared to $6,761 for the Mets.

This difference can largely be attributed to the higher ticket prices at Yankees games, which account for almost half of the total cost. Additionally, refreshments and merchandise are also more expensive at Yankee Stadium than at Citi Field.

These results show that if a fan is looking to save money while enjoying professional baseball in New York City, they should opt to attend games of the Mets rather than those of their cross-town rivals.

Hockey

The total cost for fans to watch each of New York's hockey teams per season varies significantly. The least expensive team to watch is the New York Islanders, with an estimated total season cost of $3,270.

The most expensive team to watch is the New York Rangers, with an estimated total season cost of $5,828.

In between, the New Jersey Devils have a total season cost of $3,327. This suggests that it may be more economical for fans in New York to attend Islanders or Devils games rather than Rangers games.

Soccer

The estimated total cost for fans to watch each of New York's soccer teams per season varies widely. The most expensive team to follow is the New York Red Bulls, with a total season cost of $1,030.

This includes tickets, refreshments, and one shirt. The second-most expensive team is New York City FC at $855. NJ/NY Gotham FC is the least expensive option, at $673 for a full season. It appears that following the Red Bulls is more costly than following NYCFC or Gotham FC.

Leagues Compared

Overall, the estimated total cost for fans to watch each of New York’s teams per season varies significantly depending on the league. The MLB has the highest average total season cost at $9,675, while the NHL comes in second at $4,142.

The NBA and NFL follow with an average total season cost of $4925 and $1293 respectively.

Finally, MLS is the least expensive of all leagues with an average total season cost of only $943. However, there are only 17 games in an MLS season, whereas there are 81 home games in MLB!

Summary

The cost of supporting New York's sports teams varies greatly, with factors such as sport, venue, league, and level of success all playing a big part.

The Yankees are the most expensive side to follow, but as New York's most successful side by some distance (in terms of championships) it might be a price worth paying!

Meanwhile, the MLS offers good value to sports fans, as do the women's professional teams.
