Launched in July 2022, around six months after online sports betting went live in New York, Bally Bet was the final platform to land in the state. Part of Bally's Corporation that operates a number of casinos and hotels throughout the US, Bally Bet offers a New York sportsbook app and website that are accessible and straightforward. There are some worthwhile exclusive promos to look out for, however it doesn’t yet offer quite as many betting options as some other books.

For sports betting fans in New York, there are a great range of bet types to choose from. Whether you’re new to wagering on sports, or have years of experience in betting, it pays to make sure you know about all the options available.
The simplest of all bet types, Moneyline is a straight wager on a selection to win. How many options are available to back depends on the sport. In a football match, you’ll get two while in a golf tournament it could be dozens. The odds on a strong favorite could be minuscule while on an underdog could be huge - with potential returns to match.
A bet compiling multiple - two or more - wagers with the aim of each winning. In a parlay bet, a single stake is placed with the odds multiplied for each likelihood. Handsome returns are possible, even on a small stake, but with each having to return a success the chances reduce with each selection added.
A wager on the number of points scored in a match. The sportsbook sets certain levels of scoring on which you bet that the outcome will feature more or less than the given total. Totals bets are an exciting way to bet whether you’re chasing points (over) or hoping the scoreline is limited (under).
Point Spreads means the odds maker levels the field to a numerical extent by applying a positive or negative handicap to the number of points scored by a team or players in an event. The handicap gives the underdog a notional head start and if the favorite wins by that amount or more then that’s ‘covering the spread’. Spread betting is a good way to boost odds.
As the name suggests, a futures bet is a bet on an outcome that will not be decided for some time. Typically, this could be a season-long wager such as betting that a team will be champions come the end of it. It could also be betting that a side will make the play-offs or win a cup competition.
Prop Bets are the wagers that transform sports betting from the traditional winner/loser-type outcome into a bet on almost anything happening. Prop bets aren’t connected to the result, but on an event occurring. This could be a player to score more than a given number of points, how many strikes a pitcher will throw, or a yes/no on whether a hockey player will score during the game. You can find great odds on carefully selected prop bets.
Immerse yourself in an event with live or in-game betting. Odds are updated as an event unfolds meaning you can bet based on the way it is going, place a stake on something that will happen next, or even hedge your pre-game bet that looks likely to lose with a fresh wager based on the action you’re watching.
New York betting markets provide the opportunity to wager on a comprehensive range of sports. So whatever you’re a fan of, it’s likely that you’ll be able to back your favorite team or make all the picks you want on the sports you love. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular sports to bet on in New York:
Spread bets are common in basketball betting and among the most popular types of wager with fans who like to bet on the NBA. Moneyline wagers are the simplest to bet on when it comes to basketball as draws in the NBA are very rare while under/over bets are also offered by all sportsbooks.
Very much a moneyline sport, you will find limited spread bet opportunities, commonly known as the ‘run line’ in baseball. When looking at MLB betting, often the spread offered will be -1.5 runs for the favorite. Underdog winners are more commonplace than many other sports so scour the markets for an unfancied edge.
Prop bets are a staple of gridiron games so keep an eye out for teams that start fast, or high-scoring quarterbacks and kickers exhibiting high levels of accuracy. Match bets are simple to place as there aren’t many draws in football, and football handicap betting is a particularly popular way of increasing the value of a wager for NFL betting fans.
The chances of scoring in a hockey match are not as likely as a sport like basketball, so spread bets, aka the ‘puck line’, are not set that high with +/-1.5 the most common. Another notable NHL betting feature offered by some sportsbooks is the ‘grand salami’ bet. This is a bet on the total of all the scores for matches played on a particular day.
As the USA soccer betting scene isn’t as big as in other areas of the world such as Europe, it can mean that the wise gambler can ‘beat the market’ with some shrewd choices. Point spreads are small and draws are more common in soccer than lots of other sports.
Future betting on a Tour event or Major championship is intriguing as you don’t have to sit through an entire season before such a wager completes like in other sports. Golf betting odds between sportsbooks can vary markedly so shopping around is a good strategy. There’s a huge amount of variance in every golf tournament with lucky breaks, hot streaks and even the weather making or breaking a round so there can be an edge to find in every bet.
Although dominated by the four Grand Slam championships, there are masses of tennis competitions on the ATP and WTA Tours, which means there are always plenty of options to bet on tennis. Moneyline bets on tournament winners or individual matches are the most popular, though favorites typically carry very low odds. Handicap wagers add value, and live betting on tennis is exciting as the prices change rapidly as every point, game and set is settled.
Betting on boxing can be a particularly strategic form of gambling. That’s because the very best boxers don’t participate in that many fights and when they do come around, they often attract huge levels of interest. As well as betting on who will be victorious, there are lots of prop bets offered on every boxing bout based on rounds, method of victory and everything from number of punches landed to which minute a fight will end.
A particularly volatile sport, Mixed Martial Arts can be especially rewarding in the live betting markets. That also means that betting on MMA underdogs who have a chance can land decent returns. If you follow MMA then you’ll know that there are certain fighters who are ‘reliable’ and some who never seem to build up any level of consistency, so watch out for both.
Fascinating to follow and to bet on, IndyCar and NASCAR are often as much about the manufacturers behind each team and the cars they produce as they are about the drivers. As well as the usual outright winner bets, there are lots of other betting options in motorsports for newbies and hardcore fans alike. This includes podium bets (who will finish in the top three), fastest laps, and matching two or more drivers to predict who will end the race in the best position.
Horse race betting is synonymous with New York. It was the first type of legal betting offered in New York, which was back in the 1930s. There’s three types of horse racing you will encounter as you start betting, which include quarter horse racing, thoroughbred racing and harness racing. Betting on horse racing online is very similar to betting in-person. There’s two types of bets you will come across - straight bets, where you bet on one horse in one race, and exotic bets, which involve adding more horses/races into the mix.
A massively growing area for numbers of participants, spectators and those betting, eSports wagers are hugely accessible and great fun. There are some restrictions on eSports betting in New York so the markets offered by the licensed bookmakers can be limited. Whether you’re a fan of the biggest video games, a player yourself, or merely looking to mix up your betting options, eSports offer a wide variety of bet types depending on the game with new bet types emerging all the time.
Visiting an online sportsbook is undoubtedly one of the most popular ways to gamble. It's convenient and accessible with a wide choice of sites. However, whether you intend gambling online or at a bricks-and-mortar venue, you'll need to be at least twenty-one years old.
To place an online bet, you must first become a member of your chosen New York sportsbook site. It's an easy process that's fairly similar whichever site you choose, although some may have slightly different variations.
As a bettor, you'll be required to submit some general information such as your name and address including house number and zip code. An email address will also be asked for. The next step is making up a unique username and password. Although sports betting in New York is required by law to be highly secure, it's still advisable to create a strong password of at least eight characters.
Part of the deal for allowing sport betting in New York State was to establish a firm policy of Know Your Customer (KYC). It's important to verify an account holder to prevent fraud, money laundering and underage gambling. In some instances you may be asked to upload photographic identification. Valid documents include your social security number, passport or a driver's license. Many online sportsbook sites use automated services that reduce the time you might have to wait for your identity to be confirmed.
Putting money into your new online betting account can be done through various methods. You can use direct bank transfer e-check, credit cards, and money wallets such as PayPal and Skrill. Convenient deposits can be made through the prepaid Play+ Card at local merchants who may also offer PayNearMe facilities. Some online sportsbook sites may ask you to use specific methods such as e-check or PayPal for withdrawing funds, which could mean you have to join two different finance organizations. VIP players are usually asked to use e-check. You should always read the site's terms and conditions for payment details before signing up. It saves time and prevents confusion later on.
Once you have been accepted as a full member and you have sorted your finances, you can start placing online sports bets. Most sites are mobile-friendly giving you plenty of options on how to play. Many sports betting sites offer a welcome bonus. The minimum bets are often $5 or $10. Then you simply choose your favorite sport or teams and decide on how much you want to wager. The site usually provides easy to follow instructions that you can follow step by step.
According to Logica research, 58% of US citizens already have a PayPal account. Using PayPal is reliable, easy and convenient for online betting on your favorite sports. The security features are first class. Withdrawals of prize money can often be in your account within an hour.
Otherwise known as bank transfer, this is an easy way to bet on sports in New York. You benefit from trustworthy security, and when making deposits, the transfer is instant. You can also use the same method when withdrawing your prize money. It's an ideal method for VIP bettors.
This is an excellent choice if you like to remain anonymous while betting on sports. As a prepaid card purchased from a local vendor, it helps you keep track of your spending. It's widely accepted at many online New York sportsbook sites.
This online money-wallet was launched in London, England, in 2001. It first became popular in online casinos in the UK, but has now gained a strong following in the US. Skrill is a fast and reliable e-wallet offering instant deposits. There are no fees and you can withdraw up to $6,500 per transaction.
The New York Gaming Commission authorized the use of PayNearMe at online sites offering betting on sports in the state. It's a versatile debit style card you can use to top up your online sports book account at a participating local store. Deposits are instant and you can withdraw real time cash at any ATM machine.
You can use this method at bricks-and-mortar casinos and online sports sites. It's a secure payment system that requires a photo ID when applying. Deposits are instant and withdrawals can often be completed within twenty-four hours.
One of the most convenient ways to place online sports bets is to use a mobile app. You can play from any location in New York State and at any time. Here’s a rundown of the eight sports betting apps available in the state right now:
DraftKings launched in 2012 and offers a blend of fantasy and sport betting. It's already available in many states and went live in New York on day one. The mobile app has easy navigation, but it's the wide range of entertaining sports events that make it so popular. It also has an impressive betting carousel, which based on your betting history and preferences presents to you an array of rotating bets that DraftKings considers most applicable to you. You can usually find generous bonuses and rewards too.
Established in 2009 as a fantasy sports site, FanDuel is very popular in states such as Pennsylvania and now New York. It's well-known as a technically superb betting app with a smooth-running platform. Bettors love the opportunities the FanDuel app offers, which can sometimes include risk-free bets of up to $1,000. The app also enables you to keep an eye on your bets via a live feed of the games bet on.
Caesars joined forces with the British bookmaking chain William Hill, providing it with one of the most efficient betting platforms in the States. The Caesars sports betting app offers a great array of betting markets and some amazing promotions, odds boosts and rewards.
Founded in New Jersey in 2016, MGMBet has made a big impact in betting on sports events. Its app offers an immense amount of flexibility to bettors. One of its most standout attributes is its Edit My Bet feature, which allows users to cash out a reduced payout if your wager is seeming unlikely. What makes this feature unique though is all of the other Edit My Bet options. For example, you can swap your choices or add more choices to your bet, or even add onto your bet if you’re feeling particularly lucky. You can also receive notifications on some of the best real time betting odds and promotions.
PointsBet is a relative newcomer, having been founded in 2019. It launched its online app in January 2022. Bettors like the way the site promotes local events and teams, providing it with a sense of community. Of course, their most distinctive feature is the Points Bet wager; offering wagers you can’t find anywhere else. Check it out for regular bonuses such as double risk-free bets.
BetRivers initially launched in Chicago in 2018 and is now available in New York. The app is generally competent and offers thousands of sports events throughout the week. Its standout feature is its number of parlay options and their exciting Parlay Jackpot option, which is very popular with players. Bettors find its exciting bonuses and fast payouts are great incentives to bet there.
WynnBet entices new members through offering an imaginative online sportsbook. As a newbie, you start in the Red tier and work your way up through Black and Platinum. Every bet you place awards points, helping you to eventually progress to another tier where there are additional rewards and offers.
Although the app is a relative newcomer, it's from the internationally famous Genting Group. It even partners with PointsBet to provide an exciting platform where you can enjoy a wide range of sport betting. Look out for bonuses, rewards and loyalty schemes.
Retail sports bets were allowed in New York as recently as 2019. The market quickly became so popular that the state was one of the highest earners in the US gaming industry.
When online sportsbook apps were launched in January 2022, the industry drew in a massive $2 billion in just thirty days. From February 1st to 6th, mobile betting accounted for bets of up to $315 million. By the first three weeks of February, the same pattern emerged with bets worth a total of $1.7 billion.
Retail sportsbook betting that takes place in a bricks-and-mortar venue offers an exciting live format. You become part of the crowd that watches live sporting events. Bets can be placed in person in real time, and you can watch as the game unfolds on typically huge screens found at most locations.
Retail sports betting is all about the experience, and means you can enjoy placing bets in plush surroundings whether you visit with your friends, family or on your own.
By comparison, online mobile sportsbook betting delivers the ability to place bets any time and from anywhere in the state. This means you don’t need to travel to a physical location to place your bet, which is great for convenience and accessibility.
Betting on sports via your mobile device is fast and incredibly easy. It's the perfect format for bettors who love to be actively on the move, who want to be able to make their picks without interrupting their day, or who prefer to bet from the comfort of their own home. It saves you time and money as you no longer have to travel across New York in order to place a bet.
Despite the obvious lack of sociability associated with a visit to a licensed retail venue, the sheer usability of mobile betting on sports in New York has already set the standard for American sportsbook activity.
Another great advantage of betting online is the choice of available sports book events. There are thousands of opportunities, including the most popular sporting events like the Super Bowl, which took $413 million in one week in New York alone.
When betting on sports online, you'll find a small, but excellent choice of sites with high-definition quality streaming for a succession of live events. The action happens in real time, capturing the excitement of the event as if you were there in person.
One distinct advantage that mobile sportsbook betting has over retail outlets is the amount of bonuses and promotions such as, risk-free bets and points systems for tiered levels. Convenient mobile betting on sporting events provides an easy route to appreciating the immense variety and excitement of your favorite sports.
Sports betting sites in New York usually offer an amazing set of promo codes and bonuses to attract new members. Many of the popular sites may vary their schemes from time to time, so it's worth looking in regularly. When you do take up a bonus, make sure you read the site's terms and conditions to understand the precise obligations.
Signing up for an online sports bet site often comes with a bonus for your first deposit. A typical payment you can make is around $50, although first deposit matching can sometimes be a lot higher. It usually comes complete with a percentage match, which can range from just 20% up to 100%. Deposit limits can be from $5 or $10 up to $250 or more.
The no deposit bonus is obviously an attractive welcome deal for new members. You receive funds or a bet completely for free. However, you'll often find it comes with restrictions. These could be wagering or playthrough requirements of perhaps six times. You'll often have to use up your bonus allocation within a time limit. This could vary from a few days to ninety days. You might not be allowed to place parlay bets. Always read the small print before taking up a bonus deal.
These are popular with bettors. If you lose, the risk-free bet allows you to receive back your opening wager. You can often find generous limits of up to $1,000, making the risk-free bet very lucrative if you happen to win. However, your risk-free bet is sometimes paid into your account as credits rather than money. This means you have to spend the credits on future bets, so is usually well suited to those who bet more regularly. The bonus doesn't usually include making bets on sporting events that have boosted odds.
This new style of bonus was devised not long after sports bets became legal in the US. The site operator often adds a layer of excitement by increasing the betting odds on a particular game or an aspect within it such as a player's performance. Odds boosts can be applied on events at any time, including every day.
Loyalty incentives are usually based on your betting activity. The more you place bets, the more points you earn. This often allows you to move into a different tier where additional promotions and schemes are available. You may be able to redeem your points for a bonus, bets or cash. VIP programs are usually open to high roller bettors and bring rewards such as luxury gifts, special event invitations and compensation for your losses. Some sportsbooks in New York also offer rewards in conjunction with physical locations, such as credit to spend in-resort.
Betting on sports in New York became legal at the state level in 2013, with the first retail sportsbooks becoming available in 2019. It instantly proved to be a popular pastime. However, mobile betting was to significantly outperform it when launched on January 8, 2022.
US gambling law is defined by each state instead of a nationwide policy. It means to place bets in person you have to be in the state itself. The same applies to online sports bets. Whichever way you want to gamble in New York, you have to be there. Your location is fixed by your personal details and proof of address when registering with one of the state's online betting sites. Your active site visits are usually monitored by cookie tracking.
Some states in America, such as Colorado and Maryland, permit online sportsbook gambling at eighteen years of age. However, New York opted for the higher limit of twenty-one years. The legislation is designed to protect underage gambling, which can sometimes encourage vulnerable people to develop addictive behavior and uncontrollable debts.
In New York, there are a wide range of penalties for underage sportsbook gambling. They often include fines of up to $800 or $1,000. Your driver's license could also be confiscated for six months. An alternative punishment is being forced to do unpaid work in your local neighborhood. Offenders who are repeatedly caught placing sports bets when they are underage could face a jail sentence of up to six months.
On Saturday, January 8th 2022, New York residents were finally allowed to visit specialized, online betting sites registered in the state itself. However, it had been a long slow process to introduce what has quickly become an immensely popular pastime.

The Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), which had been in place since 1992. It gave New York State the approval it needed to begin devising legislation in preparation for the introduction of online betting on sports.
Rivers Casino, based in Schenectady, was launched as the first retail venue to offer sportsbook betting. More outlets were established in subsequent months.

New York became the leading state in tax revenue generated from online sportsbooks, earning over $267 million by the end of May which is more than any other state has collected in total. Combined handle for the month was the lowest so far, at $1.2 billion with tax earnings of $55 million.
FanDuel reported $12 million in revenue from its NY sportsbook in the week ending June 19. It took 47% of all money wagered and earned 89% of total revenue during the week, cementing its position as the leading book in the state.
New York passed the £300 million mark in total tax earned from online sports betting, despite the lowest weekly total handle so far for the week ending June 26, at $218.9 million.
When New York State's online sports bet platforms launched in January 2022, the operators were liable for a 51% tax on their gross revenue. Only Rhode Island and New Jersey pay the same percentage. Every other state levies much lower taxes. Iowa and Nevada pay the lowest rate of 6.75%. Maryland and Illinois both pay 15%. A majority of states, including Arizona and Ohio, pay 10%.
Operators are taxed on their Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR). This is based on the money generated by bets after bettors' winnings have been paid. However, this figure isn't entirely accurate as it also includes free or promotional bets that don't actually have a monetary value. For instance, operators earn no revenue at all from a free bet that loses, yet they are still taxed on the bet's supposed worth. Some states such as Pennsylvania and Michigan exclude promotional bets. In New York, all bets and promotional offers contribute to the operators' GGR.
Operators are also liable for federal taxation, which is currently at 0.25% of the total funds wagered. The operator generally retains a revenue of 5% for every $100 dollars that are wagered. They use this to pay expenses and taxes.
In New York, January 2022 was the first month of taking online sports bets. The GGR was $112,999,078 from an incoming total of $1,624,919,978. Federal taxes of 0.25% were $4,062,299.95. State taxes at 51% were calculated at $57,629,529,78. This may seem excessive when an estimated 30% of GGR is made up of promotional bets with no monetary value. The taxation paid in states such as Colorado and Virginia, excludes promotional bets.
Bettors are liable for taxation on their winnings in New York that are over $600 per year. This could be a single win, or a number of smaller wins that add up to this amount. Winnings include those from online bets as well as bets placed in person.
If you have a large win, the operator often retains the federal tax of 24% and forwards it on your behalf. You'll usually be handed a W2-G form as proof.
You are liable for state tax, which is often between 4% and 10% depending on your income and whether you are single or married. New York state tax brackets for single and married individuals are shown in the table below. Living in New York, you'll also pay a local tax based on any earnings. It's known as Personal Income Tax and is levied at a rate of up to 3.876%. Use our tax calculator to precisely calculate how much money you need to pay on gambling winning amount.

January 2022 astonished everyone with the record-breaking total of almost $2 billion being placed in wagers. Collectively, New York's sites paid in excess of $70 million in taxation during the month.
This money is to be distributed amongst worthwhile projects including education, property tax relief and youth sports programs. A percentage of the money is to fund initiatives to help problem gamblers and prevent gambling addiction.

New York is a state that loves its sport. And the ability to wager quickly and easily on the fortunes of your favorite team or athlete adds extra excitement to a match or race. Quite simply, it brings you closer to the action and adds extra meaning to the event.
With a history dating back to 1925, and four Super Bowl wins, the stats are on New York Giants fans’ side when they tell you this is New York’s premier NFL team. They share the MetLife Stadium - and an intense rivalry - with the Jets.
Often referred to as the ‘little brother’ to the Giants, the New York Jets haven’t won the Super Bowl since 1968 and have been stuck in a rebuild loop during recent seasons. They do possess one of the most famous fan chants in football though - "J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!"
Competing in the NFL, the Buffalo Bills are the only pro team to play home games in the Western New York region. The Bills are notable for making three consecutive appearances at the Super Bowl between 1990 and 1993, losing each one.
They may not be the best team currently in the NBA but the New York Knicks are one of most valuable and have a rich history. In the 1970s, the Knicks had one of the greatest teams in basketball history when claiming two championships and a world title.
Featuring two current greats in the guise of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, the Brooklyn Nets have yet to win an NBA Championship, but they have assembled a talented team in recent years. A move across the river from New Jersey occurred in 2012 and has attracted some very famous fans. Beyonce, Jay-Z and Bill Clinton are among them.
One of the original members of the Women's National Basketball Association, Liberty have endured some up-and-down seasons of late. Featuring in the WNBA Finals on four occasions between 1997 and 2002, New York Liberty hold the record for most appearances in the season-ending showpiece without victory.
Winners of 27 World Series, the Yankees are one of the best-known names in baseball and have been among the favorites to win it all in the last few seasons. The Yankees’ rivalry with the Boston Red Sox is one of the biggest in baseball.
On the rise again and with a billionaire owner in Steve Cohen, the Mets most recent of two World Series titles came way back in 1986. The ‘Subway Series’ of games between New York City teams sees the Mets enjoy a fierce rivalry with the Yankees.
With four Stanley Cup wins for the hockey team based out of Manhattan, the Rangers are one of the most successful sports teams in New York. The current team looks young and exciting, and glory could well be on the cards again.
Not quite the sporting dynasty they once were, the Islanders haven’t won a division title since the late 1980s, but the hockey team has attracted a fine young coach and a deep roster of late which suggests a return to better times lies ahead.
Some fallow years have followed the Devils’ last Stanley Cup final appearance in 2012, a third in their history. The ‘Battle of the Hudson River’ rivalry with the New York Rangers has produced some thrilling matches down the years.
More noted for what they haven’t won than they have, the Sabers hold joint records for the longest NHL playoff drought and oldest franchise in existence never to have won the Stanley Cup. Long losing streaks have also been notable in recent years.
The only Major League Soccer team to be based in New York, NYCFC’s highest honor since formation in 2015 has been as winners of the MLS Cup in 2021.
The second MLS team located in the New York metropolitan area, the Red Bulls compete for the Atlantic Cup against capital club D.C. United. The Red Bulls only brush with near-top level success came with a 2008 appearance in the final of the MLS Cup.
New York is a state that loves its sport. And the ability to wager quickly and easily on the fortunes of your favorite team or athlete adds extra excitement to a match or race. Quite simply, it brings you closer to the action and adds extra meaning to the event.
North America’s premier professional basketball league, the National Basketball Association, oversees the competition that comprises 30 teams; including one from Canada. Most of the best basketball players in the world play in the NBA, and that makes the games particularly special for hoopfest fans.
The top flight of the number one sport in America, the National Football League is the biggest competition on the planet for Gridiron devotees. The NFL dominates the sports TV schedule, particularly on a Sunday when most of the matches are played. The NFL features 32 teams who only play 16 matches each season meaning every game really matters, and such is the physicality it wouldn’t be possible to compete in more.
The most famous hockey competition in the world, the National Hockey League is made up of 25 teams from the USA and seven from Canada. The speed and ferocity of play are breathtaking, while the occasional exhibitions of brutality cannot be matched in any other sport. The NHL is huge and ultra-competitive meaning the best teams don’t always win, and upsets are delightfully commonplace.
Labeled ‘America’s favorite pastime’, baseball gets serious during the Major League season. There are 30 teams in the MLB and a whopping 162 games, meaning there’s almost always a match to watch. The traditions of the MLB are long, and each new generation of players takes the sport to a new level. As there are no time constraints in MLB games - each team is allotted 27 ‘outs’ - it means patience and strength are just as important as raw talent and no comeback is ever entirely impossible.
At the highest level of college football in the US, the most prestigious sporting schools in the land compete for bragging rights. The National Collegiate Athletic Association oversees 10 divisions featuring 130 teams. Fans of the NCAA are just as loud and passionate as those who follow the pro teams, perhaps more so given just how much is invested emotionally in each regional representative. The NCAA season always starts in celebration on Labor Day, and the carnival continues right through to its December climax.
As the competition in which top college basketball teams compete, the standard in the NCAA is incredibly high, as are the stakes. Made up of sides with long winning traditions and scrappy upstarts looking to prove themselves, the Collegiate Basketball Championships can be over in the blink of an eye for many teams thanks to its single round-elimination format. Taking place in spring each year, the NCAA season culminates in the thrill that is the March Madness finals.
Nothing gains interest from the betting public quite like a big event, capturing the attention of seasoned bettors and casual fans alike. And when it comes to sporting events to bet on in New York, the calendar is jam packed. With some great events to look forward to across a wide range of sports, which ones do you most look forward to?
Billed as the ‘greatest show on earth’ there’s nothing quite like the annual playoff championship as two teams bid to win the NFL title. The Super Bowl is the biggest sports betting event in the American calendar, and the biggest sportsbooks go all in on betting offers ahead of it.
The most exciting event in baseball, the World Series is notable for the intrigue that comes from betting on the MLB championships. Baseball is one of the most data-driven sports around so bettors armed with a few stats can scour the markets for value and potential profit.
The culmination of the basketball season throws up plenty of thrills, spills and a handful of upsets. The Finals are known for producing big changes in form from one game to the next. The best-of-seven format means that teams can really turn it on when it matters to keep their championships alive or occasionally wilt under the pressure. Play-off games often go down to the wire so live betting is an exciting affair with odds changing by the second.
One of the fastest growing sports and indeed areas of sports betting, fights in the octagon ring are a real thrill to watch with UFC the biggest MMA franchise. Most of the money on an MMA bout goes on the moneyline to pick which fighter will win but other popular bets include the mode of victory (knockout, submission, decision etc) and handicap wagers. Seven different titles run from bantamweight to heavyweight for futures betting.
The biggest bouts in the calendar attract enormous viewing figures and subsequently massive numbers of bets on the outcome. There are several different boxing belts or championships to compete for with the biggest being the WBC, IBF and WBO.
With a multitude of permutations and factors that affect the outcome of every race, betting on horse racing is an artform all of its own. The Kentucky Derby is the biggest horse race in the US. Study the form, assess the going, and pick out the favorite or a less fancied runner from the card.
If you’re a fan of the ball-and-racket game then there’s always a match or championship to bet on somewhere in the world. The big interest and big money goes on the four annual Grand Slams with Queens the focus of the world every year from August through to September as the US Open gets underway at Flushing Meadows.
The golf season centers firmly around the PGA Tour and the four Majors held each year. With 48 Tour events including three FedEx Cup Playoffs, there’s a plethora of betting opportunities for golf fans. The highlight of the American golf season is the Masters with its traditional April berth on the calendar closely followed by the US Open, and PGA Championships. Golf tournaments have big fields and there’s always a fair number of players with a chance to win.
The final weeks of the US college basketball tournament that features many top schools from across the country, betting on the National Championships is downright fun. With a field of over 60 there’s lots of matches to follow with odds changing rapidly as higher-ranked teams typically dispatch of lesser opposition in the opening rounds or occasionally succumb to a shock exit. As the finals approach, spreads shrink as the competition intensifies. There’s often value to be had in the over/under markets too because college basketball total scores are insanely difficult to predict.
The beauty of betting on fast cars is the range of classes raced and the very different characteristics of the biggest motor race events. Some tracks are filled with tricky turns while others are notable for breathtaking flat speed and overtaking opportunities. The Nascar season climaxes with the Daytona 500 contested around 200 laps of the oval Daytona International Speedway track, while the Indy 500 is the highlight of the Indycar championships. Futures betting on the overall champion typically see a handful of hot favorites with longer odds on the rest. But in motorsport, anything can happen.
New York state gambling regulations mean that betting on in-state college teams is not allowed. Sportsbooks are also not able to offer odds on NY athletes competing elsewhere in the country. If an event isn’t featuring New York teams or competitors and isn’t held in the state, then you might find college bets available with certain bookmakers.
If you’re wondering what you can’t bet on in New York, then it’s important to know that at present, sports are the only permitted type of online gambling allowed in New York state. Poker is allowed but you won’t find games like slots and other casino favorites among the offerings of the licensed NY gambling platforms. In the wider world, New York residents are also prevented from placing bets on major entertainment events including the Oscars, Emmys and Grammys. And unless the rules change ahead of the next presidential election, New Yorkers will not be able to bet on that outcome either, as betting on politics is something else that’s not legal.
Some of New York’s biggest teams have joined up with betting operators to form official partnerships. This means that you can often find some great offers or promotions if you bet on New York sports teams via their official betting partner’s apps or websites.
