New York's legal mobile sportsbooks crossed $100 billion in cumulative handle during the week ending August 9, 2026, according to an NYSafeBets analysis of official New York State Gaming Commission reports.
The milestone arrived just over four and a half years after statewide mobile wagering launched on January 8, 2022. Through August 9, the state's sportsbooks had accepted $100,143,415,426 in mobile wagers and generated $9,124,015,319 in gross gaming revenue.
The figures show the extraordinary scale of the legal New York mobile sportsbook market, but they also require context. Handle is the total amount wagered, not the amount deposited or lost by individual bettors. It can include the same dollars being wagered more than once after payouts are returned to accounts.

New York ended the week of August 2 at approximately $99.77 billion in cumulative mobile handle. Another $372.9 million was wagered during the week ending August 9, pushing the market more than $143 million beyond the $100 billion line.
That works out to an average of nearly $60 million wagered per day from launch through August 9. Daily volume has not been constant—football season typically produces much heavier betting than summer—but the average illustrates how quickly New York became one of the country's largest sports betting markets.
The $100 billion figure is not the amount New York bettors collectively lost. Three different measurements matter:
Handle is every dollar wagered, including money that may be recycled into additional bets after a payout.
Gross gaming revenue, or GGR, is the amount retained by sportsbooks after paying winning bets, before operating expenses and most adjustments.
Hold is GGR divided by handle. It measures the share of wagering volume retained by operators across the market.
Through August 9, statewide weekly reports show a lifetime hold of approximately 9.11%. In other words, about $9.12 billion of the $100.14 billion in reported handle became sportsbook GGR. That is an industry-level calculation, not a measure of what any individual customer won or lost.
The NYSGC also states that GGR is reported on a cash basis. Wagers on future events are recognized as current revenue, while payouts are recognized when winning wagers are redeemed. That reporting method can produce sharp weekly or monthly swings.
For an operator-level comparison, NYSafeBets analyzed complete monthly reports from January through July 2026. FanDuel leads the year by both handle and GGR, while DraftKings remains close enough to lead individual months.
| Sportsbook | 2026 YTD handle | Handle share | 2026 YTD GGR | GGR share | Hold |
| FanDuel | $5,381,625,429 | 35.39% | $597,857,984 | 42.01% | 11.11% |

Operator totals can differ from the statewide total by a few dollars because of source-table rounding. Market shares use the official statewide totals.
FanDuel led New York sportsbook handle through July 2026, followed closely by DraftKings. Source: NYSGC; NYSafeBets calculation.
FanDuel Sportsbook NY accounted for 35.39% of 2026 handle through July, compared with 33.79% for DraftKings. That is a lead of roughly $242.6 million in accepted wagers.
FanDuel's advantage is wider in GGR. It generated $597.9 million, or 42.01% of statewide GGR, while DraftKings Sportsbook NY generated $480.4 million and held a 33.75% share.
July showed why the market leader depends on the metric being measured. DraftKings accepted $661.5 million in wagers during the month, narrowly ahead of FanDuel's $651.2 million. FanDuel nevertheless generated more GGR—$86.2 million versus $72.9 million—because its July hold was higher.
That does not prove one sportsbook offered better or worse value on any specific market. Operator hold is influenced by bet mix, parlays, futures, customer behavior and event results. Bettors should compare the actual price available for the wager they want to place.
Fanatics Sportsbook NY has separated itself from the middle of the market. Its $1.742 billion in 2026 handle represented an 11.45% share, placing it well behind the two leaders but comfortably ahead of every other operator.
Fanatics' GGR share was lower at 8.72%, reflecting a 7.12% YTD hold. Again, lower hold should not be treated as a direct ranking of odds quality or customer value without bet-level pricing data.
BetMGM Sportsbook NY ranked fourth by 2026 handle at 8.09%, followed by Caesars Sportsbook New York at 6.54%.
Together, FanDuel, DraftKings, Fanatics, BetMGM and Caesars controlled approximately 95.3% of all New York mobile handle through July. BetRivers, theScore Bet and Bally Bet split the remaining 4.7%.
TheScore Bet's current results include the same New York license position previously used by ESPN BET. The NYSGC report notes that ESPN BET was rebranded as theScore Bet as of the week ending December 7, 2025.
New York generated $15.21 billion in mobile handle and $1.423 billion in GGR from January through July 2026. The state's official monthly reports show $725.9 million in net revenue to education over the same period.
| Month | Mobile handle | GGR | Hold | Net revenue to education |
| January | $2,443,670,306 | $250,629,698 | 10.26% | $127,821,146 |
| February | $2,007,210,673 | $175,828,885 | 8.76% | $89,699,717 |
| March | $2,328,304,032 | $217,285,589 | 9.33% | $110,815,651 |
| April | $2,165,201,727 | $244,127,505 | 11.28% | $124,519,031 |
| May | $2,132,772,286 | $204,161,821 | 9.57% | $104,122,529 |
| June | $2,253,568,545 | $116,764,161 | 5.18% | $59,564,366 |
| July | $1,878,017,985 | $214,365,817 | 11.41% | $109,326,567 |
| 2026 YTD | $15,208,745,554 | $1,423,163,476 | 9.36% | $725,869,007 |
July handle declined 16.7% from June, but it was still 34.0% higher than July 2025 and the largest July total since New York launched mobile betting. July GGR rose 37.8% year over year.
The month also demonstrates why handle and revenue should never be used interchangeably. GGR increased 83.6% from June to July even as handle fell by $375.6 million. The statewide hold moved from a customer-friendly 5.18% in June to 11.41% in July.
| Metric | Jan.–July 2025 | Jan.–July 2026 | Change |
| Handle | $14.312 billion | $15.209 billion | +6.3% |
| GGR | $1.397 billion | $1.423 billion | +1.8% |
| Hold | 9.76% | 9.36% | -0.41 percentage points |
The gap is important. More money was wagered in 2026, but the lower aggregate hold meant sportsbook GGR grew much more slowly. A single month or quarter can move sharply depending on sports results and when winning future bets are redeemed.
New York taxes mobile sportsbook GGR at 51%, one of the defining features of the state's limited-license model. Official monthly reports show $4.653 billion in cumulative net revenue to education through July 2026.
Most of that revenue supports public education, with specific annual amounts earmarked for other purposes. Current NYSGC reports state that:
$12 million annually is distributed for problem gambling education and treatment beginning in 2026.
$5 million annually supports sports programs for underserved youth.
The remaining net revenue to education supports New York's public schools.
The state's monthly tax figure should be taken directly from the NYSGC report rather than estimated by multiplying GGR by 51%. Prior-period adjustments, fines and other reporting items can create small differences.
Market share measures business scale. It does not identify the best sportsbook for every person or every wager.
A larger operator can offer a deeper market menu or more liquidity, but its statewide handle does not prove that it has the best line on a particular game. A higher hold does not prove that every customer received worse odds, and a lower hold does not prove the opposite. Parlays, futures, customer mix and event outcomes all affect the number.

No. Hold is total GGR divided by handle across all customers and bet types. It is affected by parlays, futures, customer behavior and sports results, so it cannot prove which app offered the best price on a specific wager.
