The Buffalo Bills -1.5 at Houston and New York Jets +3 at Tennessee are our strongest early positions for 2026 NFL Week 1. Buffalo has the more stable quarterback advantage and Houston has already lost wide receiver Jayden Higgins for the season. The Jets' low-total matchup, Geno Smith's efficient preseason debut and the value of a full field goal give New York a realistic path to covering in Tennessee.
Those are early—not final—recommendations. The NFL's 53-man roster deadline is August 30, and the first official Week 1 practice reports will arrive during game week. Breece Hall's groin injury makes the Jets pick conditional on his recovery. Our Cowboys-Giants prediction is Dallas to win a close game, but Giants +3 would be the only spread worth considering; at the widely available +2.5, the value is too thin.

Quick picks: Bills -1.5 at Texans; Jets +3 at Titans; Cowboys to beat the Giants, but no spread bet below Giants +3. Recommended stake: no more than 0.5 unit on any early position.
| Rank | Matchup | Early position | Playable number | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bills at Texans | Bills -1.5 | Buffalo -2.5 or better | Moderate |
| 2 | Jets at Titans | Jets +3 | New York +3 only; otherwise wait | Moderate-low |
| 3 | Cowboys at Giants | Pass for now | Consider Giants +3 or better | Low before injury reports |

Important line note: FOX Sports and ESPN list Tennessee -3 against the Jets, while the latest CBS Sports board shows Titans -2.5. That half-point is central to our recommendation: Jets +3 is playable; Jets +2.5 is only a lean. Buffalo remains -1.5 on the cited Week 1 boards. Two preseason games are enough to identify developments worth monitoring, but not enough to treat exhibition records as predictive models.
Buffalo is 2-0 after beating Carolina 29-14 and Cleveland 31-7. The most useful evidence came from the starters against Carolina, when Josh Allen and DJ Moore connected three times for 61 yards in two series. The Cleveland score was driven largely by reserves and depth evaluation.
The Jets shut out Pittsburgh 17-0. Geno Smith completed all seven passes for 65 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive. The result carries limited weight because Pittsburgh rested key starters, but Smith's timing and ankle response were legitimate positives.
Tennessee beat Seattle 19-16 but showed first-team flaws. Cam Ward completed 8 of 12 passes for 69 yards, while the starting defense allowed touchdowns on Seattle's first two possessions. Head coach Robert Saleh described the game as useful teaching material rather than a finished product.
The Giants beat Miami 26-3. Jaxson Dart sat after playing in the opener, while Jameis Winston completed 15 of 21 passes for 150 yards. The defense and depth stood out, but Malik Nabers' recovery remains more important to the Week 1 handicap than the final score.
Dallas opened with a 17-7 win in Seattle. Brian Schottenheimer praised the defensive response while pointing to penalties and other preseason details that still need cleaning up.
The takeaway is not that teams with winning preseason records will win in Week 1. The useful information is narrower: first-team execution, health, role clarity and how new coaching staffs are installing their systems.
Prediction: Bills 24, Texans 20
Best bet: Buffalo -1.5
Bet limit: Playable through Bills -2.5; pass at -3
Buffalo is the cleanest early side because the price asks the Bills only to win by a field goal. Josh Allen remains the strongest individual matchup advantage in the game, and Buffalo has given its rebuilt passing game meaningful August work.
In the preseason opener, Allen and new receiver DJ Moore connected three times for 61 yards in only two possessions. The first-team offense produced explosive gains through play action, and Buffalo followed its 29-14 win over Carolina with a 31-7 victory in Cleveland. Preseason scores should never be treated as regular-season projections, but execution from healthy first-team players is more useful than the final score.
Houston has more uncertainty. Wide receiver Jayden Higgins suffered a torn ACL and will miss the 2026 season, removing an important outside target before Week 1. Joe Mixon's foot recovery also deserves monitoring, even though the opener remains nearly three weeks away. Houston still has enough defensive talent and home-field advantage to keep the margin tight, which is why laying three points would materially change the bet.
The Bills have also carried several lower-body injury concerns during camp. That is the principal reason for limiting this to a half-unit early position rather than treating Buffalo as a high-confidence play. Check the latest Buffalo Bills team information and the official Week 1 injury report before kickoff.
What would change the pick: Buffalo -3 or worse; a significant Allen/offensive-line injury; or confirmation that multiple starting Bills receivers will miss Week 1.
Prediction: Titans 20, Jets 19
Best bet: Jets +3
Bet limit: Take +3; do not chase +2 or a heavily juiced +2.5
This is a number-driven underdog position, not a declaration that New York is the better team. Three points matter in an NFL game carrying one of Week 1's lowest totals. When the total is 38.5, each point represents a larger share of the expected scoring than it does in a game totaled above 50.
Geno Smith's Jets debut supplied a useful sign after he missed the first preseason game with a sore ankle. Smith completed all seven attempts for 65 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive against Pittsburgh. New York's defense then completed a 17-0 shutout, although the Steelers rested Aaron Rodgers and relied on reserve quarterbacks. The appropriate conclusion is modest: Smith looked comfortable, and the defensive depth performed its assignment. It is not evidence that the Jets have solved every problem from a 3-14 season.
The more important injury is now Breece Hall's groin. Head coach Aaron Glenn said Hall is expected to miss two to three weeks but should be ready for the September 13 opener. That timetable is encouraging, not binding. Hall's workload and practice participation will materially affect both the Jets' offensive floor and the value of taking +3 in a low-total game.
Tennessee is 2-0 in the preseason under Robert Saleh, and Cam Ward completed 8 of 12 passes against Seattle. The Titans still needed four Joey Slye field goals and scored only one touchdown in a 19-16 win. Their starting defense also allowed touchdowns on Seattle's first two possessions. Those details support taking the field goal, but not an aggressive Jets moneyline wager.
The published market range spans Titans -2.5 to -3. The value appears only when bettors can take the full field goal. If +3 is unavailable, wait for the official injury reports rather than accepting a clearly worse number. Follow the New York Jetsfor schedule and matchup updates.
What would change the pick: Hall is limited or ruled out; Smith suffers an ankle setback; Tennessee's offensive line exits camp materially healthier than New York's defensive front; or the price drops below Jets +2.5.

Prediction: Cowboys 27, Giants 24
Current recommendation: No bet at Cowboys -2.5 / Giants +2.5
Target: Giants +3 or better
The Sunday night game should generate the most New York betting interest, but that does not make the current spread a mandatory bet. Dallas has attracted a majority of the early public action, and the Cowboys moved from -1.5 at DraftKings in May to -2.5 by August 23. The line is approaching the most important nearby key number.
The Giants have delivered encouraging August evidence under John Harbaugh. Jaxson Dart and most of the first-team offense played in the opener, Cam Skattebo returned from his 2025 ankle injury, and New York beat Miami 26-3 in Week 2 of the preseason. Right guard Francis Mauigoa and cornerback Colton Hood were expected back at practice after minor injuries.
The largest unresolved issue is Malik Nabers. The receiver has progressed to team work in a non-contact jersey while returning from ACL surgery, but Week 1 availability and workload should not be assumed. His status directly affects New York's ability to punish Dallas downfield and therefore affects both the spread and the 48.5-point total.
Dallas is the more likely winner today, but New York becomes interesting if the market reaches a full field goal. At +2.5, bettors can lose even if the Giants take the game to the final possession. At +3, that same common result becomes a push. That difference is more important than creating a forced opinion three weeks before kickoff.
See the latest New York Giants schedule and team information.
New England gets more than a field goal in the Super Bowl rematch, and Seattle's injury list now includes rookie safety Bud Clark, who suffered a broken ankle, plus concerns involving guard Mason Richman. Seattle remains the defending champion at home, so the injury difference is not yet enough to oppose the Seahawks. Lean: Patriots +3.5; wait for game-week participation reports.
Pittsburgh's veteran-quarterback setup and Atlanta's unsettled offensive hierarchy introduce too much August uncertainty. The number is attractive only with the full field goal. Lean: Falcons +3; pass at +2.5.
Philadelphia's matchup history and Washington's defensive transition favor the Eagles, but the market moved from -4.5 to -5.5. That move removed much of the early value. Lean: Eagles, but wait for -4.5 rather than laying -5.5.
The timing of this article is its most important limitation. The NFL's third preseason weekend runs August 27-29. Clubs then must reduce their active rosters to 53 players by 6 p.m. ET on August 30. Practice squads begin forming on August 31.
Official regular-season injury reporting begins in game week. For Sunday games, clubs must file practice reports on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Until then, camp participation, coach comments and preseason availability are useful signals, but they are not substitutes for the formal reports required by the NFL.
We will reassess each recommended position after:
final roster cuts and waiver claims;
the last preseason games;
the first official Week 1 practice reports;
confirmed quarterback and offensive-line depth charts;
material spread or total movement.
NYSafeBets does not grade a pick by whether the favored team appears more talented. The wager must still offer value at the available number. Our process weighs:
quarterback and offensive-line stability;
injuries and expected availability;
matchup-specific pass and run advantages;
coaching continuity and schematic changes;
travel, rest and venue effects;
market movement and key spread numbers;
whether the available price still offers an acceptable margin for error.
Preseason wins and losses receive limited weight because playing time and objectives vary by team. First-team execution can inform an evaluation, but a late touchdown by players competing for reserve positions should not drive a regular-season bet.

Buffalo -1.5 at Houston is our strongest early Week 1 position. The Bills have the quarterback edge, while Houston has lost receiver Jayden Higgins for the season. The recommendation is playable only through Buffalo -2.5 and must be reassessed after official injury reports.
Our projected score is Titans 20, Jets 19. The betting value is New York +3 because a low-total game increases the importance of receiving a full field goal. The pick must be reconsidered if Breece Hall is unavailable or limited.
We project Dallas to win 27-24, but recommend passing at the current Cowboys -2.5 / Giants +2.5 spread. Giants +3 or better would be worth considering after Malik Nabers' status is clearer.
The season begins Wednesday, September 9, with the New England Patriots visiting the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers and Rams play in Melbourne on Thursday, followed by the main Sunday slate on September 13.
NFL game-week practice reporting begins during the September 6-12 window. Exact reporting days depend on each team's game day. Bettors should distinguish those official reports from informal training-camp updates.
Only when the current number provides enough value to compensate for unresolved roster and injury information. Smaller stakes are appropriate, and many matchups are better left until official reports become available.
