Cincinnati Bengals - Expectations This Season

Having made it to the Super Bowls Finals last season where they lost out to the Los Angeles Rams, the Cincinnati Bengals will be looking to go one step further this year. The team was not amongst the leading favorites preseason, with odds in NFL betting markets placing them middle of the pack, however are priced at about evens to equal their win record from last year.

There are some excellent players on the 2022-23 Cincinnati Bengals roster including Ja’Marr Chase, Joe Burrow, Trey Hendrickson, Tee Higgins, and Jessie Bates III. Having tasted glory last year by winning the AFC Championship, the team knows what they need to do and look likely to reach at least the playoffs.

Preseason was a little disrupted with some injuries in the squad, but once they find their feet, and if key players stay fit, the Bengals should have a good year.

Cincinnati Bengals - Recent Form & Highlights

The Bengals finished with a 10–7 record in the last season, which is beyond their entire win from the previous two seasons combined. In addition, the previous season marked their first Super Bowl appearance since 1988.

Indeed, the Cincinnati Bengals have had a mixed start to this season, losing their first two games before securing wins against the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins.

The Bengals had the first general pick in the NFL Draft in the 2021 season, which they used to choose LSU quarterback Joe Burrow. Compared to their 2–14 record from 2019, they performed better. However, they were eliminated from playoff contention for the 5th consecutive year after a week 13 loss to the Dolphins.

Although the Cincinnati Bengals team has had 52 seasons in the NFL as of the 2021 season, they are one of the NFL teams that have never won the Super Bowl.

About The Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals was founded on 24th May 1967, and while the team started playing in the AFL in 1968, preparations for the franchise were started by Paul Brown, who also co-founded and coached the Cleveland Browns, three full years before the team started playing in the American Football League.

1968 was a significant year for the Bengals. They had performed woefully by losing six out of their first seven games, but the team came alive after winning their last seven games to claim the first AFC Central title at 8-6 over Cleveland.

The Bengals won the American Football Conference championship in 1981, 1988, and 2022, although they have never won the Super Bowl. The team has always experienced highs and moments of struggle. However, they performed better in the mid-2000s, and this performance remained till the mid-2010s when they became more constant postseason contenders. Unfortunately, they continued to struggle after the regular season.

Marvin Lewis was the team’s head coach from 2003 to 2018 and is credited with turning the fortunes of the team around. With Lewis as their coach, the Bengals had more success stories, returning to the NFL playoffs in 2005. The Bengals were divisional champions in 2009 and made it to the playoffs consecutively between 2011 and 2015, a first in the franchise’s history.

The Cincinnati Bengals currently play their home games at the Paycor Stadium, formerly called Paul Brown Stadium, named after Paul Brown. It is an open football stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio that opened on 19th August 2000.

The Stadium’s exterior has a unique architectural design with over 65,000 green seats. In addition, the Stadium has various facilities including 144 luxury suites, around 7,000 club seats, two club restaurants, and a Bengal team store. The Paycor Stadium offers beautiful views of the Cincinnati skyline and the Ohio River to fans at the game.

Various teams have competed against the Cincinnati Bengals, which gives them a long list of rivals. There are, however, some notable clashes that fans and the team are always keen to win.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are perhaps the biggest rivals of the Bengals. Both teams have become division contenders since 1970 and have played each other twice a year since then.

The Cleveland Browns are of course another big rival for the Bengals because of the origins and history of the teams, and the Bengals–Browns rivalry is known as the Battle of Ohio. The Browns led in the 90s, and the Bengals led in the 2000s. The two teams have skilled quarterbacks that they believe can help to up their game against each other.

The Bengals also have a rivalry with the Baltimore Ravens which began in 1996 and intensified in 2003 when the Bengals employed Marvin Lewis, previously defensive coordinator of the Ravens, to be their head coach. Most recently the Ravens beat Cincinnati 72-30 in 2019 on their way to a two-game sweep.
